It’s hard to know what to say about photographer Sally Davies’ Happy Meal Project. Maybe it’s because Davies, a Canadian-born shooter who lives in New York City, lets her images speak for themselves. Whatever it is, for the last nearly 200 days, she’s been taking shots of one McDonald’s Happy Meal as it, well, doesn’t disintegrate or mould or grow hairy tentacles like real food would. (Apparently, there’s a 12-year-old burger out there as well.) Salon explains the science behind its immortality here—a combination of preservatives and salt and alchemy, it seems. But how about someone explaining its appeal?
Or, for that matter, explaining how it is that schools allow such fast “food” to be served in their cafeterias. According to the School Nutrition Association in the US more than one-third of American schools offer restaurant-branded items for lunch (Domino’s is the biggest player). And in the bigger districts half of all schools serve brand-name fast food. Maybe Davies’ art project should be required teaching—like sex ed and phys ed, how about hamburger ed?
