Yesterday was the unofficial first day of summer here in Toronto—the Queen’s Birthday—and the first of our bean plants burst up through the soil in celebration. I think of it as the feu de joie rifle salute of the vegetable world.
We’re not certain which bean it is since we planted some heritage seeds from a friend of my mom, as well as seeds provided by our Garden Master (GM) across the street. GM’s seeds are saved from some provided by his mother-in-law in Portugal. Maybe we’ll do a New World/Old World bean-off to coincide with the World Cup.
